UGC usage rights explained, from organic posts to perpetual licenses
UGC usage rights decide what a brand may do with a clip after it is delivered: post it on its own feed, run it as a paid ad, keep it on a product page for years or run it from the creator's own account. Getting this wrong is how winning ads get paused. This guide explains the common licensing tiers, how whitelisting fits in, how term and perpetual licenses differ, and how UgcModels writes a rights record for every asset.
What UGC usage rights cover
When a creator films a video for a brand, payment for the video and permission to use it are two different things. The rate pays for the work. The usage rights say where the brand may show the result, for how long and in which form. A clear license answers four questions.
- Where can the asset run, for example the brand's organic feed, paid ads, a product page or an Amazon listing?
- For how long, a fixed term or with no end date?
- Can the brand edit it, cut new versions or add captions and music?
- Can the brand run it from the creator's own account as an ad?
This page is a practical guide, not legal advice. For contracts with unusual terms, ask your own counsel.

Licensing tiers on UgcModels
Every order on UgcModels carries a usage rights field that the brand picks before the creator starts work. The tier is part of the price, so both sides agree on it up front.
| Tier | What it allows | Price on top of the creator rate | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic only | Posting on the brand's own social accounts and site | Included | Brand TikTok, Reels, Shorts |
| Paid ads, 3 months | Organic plus paid ads for 3 months from the start date | Plus 30 percent | Testing creative on Meta and TikTok ads |
| Paid ads, 12 months | Organic plus paid ads for 12 months | Plus 60 percent | Scaling a winning ad |
| Perpetual | Use with no end date across the platforms in the order | Plus 100 percent | Amazon listings, product pages, evergreen ads |
Example: a 30 s clip at a creator rate of USD 200 costs USD 200 with organic only, USD 260 with paid ads for 3 months, USD 320 for 12 months and USD 400 for perpetual use, before your plan's platform fee. Rates and fees are on UGC creator pricing.
Organic only, included in the rate. Best for posting on your own TikTok, Reels or Shorts.
Paid ads, 3 months, plus 30 percent. Best for testing creative on Meta and TikTok ads.
Paid ads, 12 months, plus 60 percent. Best for winners you plan to scale.
Perpetual, plus 100 percent. Best for Amazon listings and product pages that stay up for years.
Term license or perpetual license
A term license is cheaper and fits testing. Most paid creative is tested for a few weeks, and only some clips become long running winners. Booking paid ads for 3 months keeps the first cost low, and you can extend a winner by booking a longer term with the same creator.
A perpetual license costs more up front and removes the end date. It fits assets that stay live for a long time without anyone checking them, such as product page videos, Amazon listing images and evergreen brand ads. If you know a clip will sit on a listing for years, perpetual is usually simpler than tracking renewals.
- Choose a term when you are testing and expect to retire most clips.
- Choose perpetual for listings, product pages and assets you will not review often.
- Extend a term before the end date if the ad is still running.
Whitelisting and creator account ads
Whitelisting means running an ad from the creator's own social account instead of the brand's account, so the ad shows the creator's name and handle. Platforms call this by different names, such as Spark Ads on TikTok or partnership ads on Meta. It needs extra permission because the brand uses the creator's identity, not just the video.
On UgcModels, write whitelisting into the brief and agree it with the creator in the order before work starts, together with the paid ads term. The creator grants access through the platform's own tools, and the term in the rights record shows how long the brand may run those ads. Our TikTok UGC creator page covers TikTok specifics.
A rights record for every asset
When an order closes, UgcModels writes a rights record per asset. It holds the creator, the asset, the tier, the start date, the end date and the platforms covered. Anyone on your team can open it from the asset, so the answer to "can we run this as an ad" is a lookup, not a search through old messages.
- Creator and asset, linked to the order.
- Tier, start date and end date.
- Platforms covered, as agreed in the order.
- Export of records in bulk on Scale and through an API on Enterprise.
Before you move any clip into paid ads, check our UGC licensing checklist.
Usage rights mistakes brands make
- Running an organic only clip as a paid ad without upgrading the tier.
- Letting a paid ad run past the end of the term because nobody tracked the date.
- Agreeing rights in a message and never writing them down.
- Assuming whitelisting is included when only the video was licensed.
- Cutting a clip into a new ad with claims the creator never agreed to say.
Each of these is easier to avoid when the tier is part of the order and the dates sit on the asset. See how it fits the whole flow on the UGC platform page.
FAQ
Can I upgrade usage rights after delivery
Yes. Book an upgrade with the same creator in a new order, choosing the paid ads term or perpetual. The new tier gets its own rights record.
Is organic use really included
Yes. Organic only use on the brand's own accounts and site is included in every creator rate. Paid ads and perpetual use add the uplift shown in the tier table.
What exactly does the brand get after approval
The brand gets the license described by the tier chosen in the order, recorded in the rights record for each asset. The general license terms are in the Terms.
Does whitelisting cost extra
UgcModels adds no separate platform fee for it. Agree it with the creator in the order together with the paid ads term, and it runs for the same term as the paid usage in the rights record.
